PC Based Traffic Light Control

Image
Block Diagram

One of the most pressing problems faced by people in large cities & towns is the congestions of roads leading to those seemingly inadvertent traffic jams. Most of the signals are pre timed i.e. the signal duration is fixed so even if there is less traffic on one of the roads the signal duration remains the same. Over here we have connected the Microcontroller of the traffic light serially to a Central PC. Thus the signal timing can be changed through the PC and even if the cable between the Microcontroller and the PC is disconnected the Microcontroller will continue to work.

Basic Blocks of PC Based Traffic Light Control

1.       Microcontroller.

2.       Signal.

3.       MAX 232.

4.       Power Supply

Microcontroller

We have used ATMEL’s AT89S51 microcontroller. It is used to change the signal at the set time as well as to communicate with the Central Computer & get the signal duration.

SIGNAL

Since we are controlling traffic of a crossroad, we will use total four Green, four Orange(amber) and four Red LED’s.

MAX232

Communication with the PC is done through the SERIAL PORT. The protocol of serial port is RS-232, for interfacing the controller to the PC using RS 232 protocol we require MAX 232 IC.

POWER SUPPLY

The complete circuit works on 5 volts. In this section this 5 volts is generated from 230v. Click here for Power Supply Details.
