1. Using PNP/NPN transistors
Nice tutorial, but i'm afraid I found real mistake. On figure you've used NPN transistor. It needs about 0.6-0.7 V voltage between emitter and gate. Therefore if gate voltage would be equal/lower than VCC (and probably it will) you'll get extra voltage drop on transisor, making it will work in active part of characteristics and therefore it would be hot. Better idea is to use a PNP transistor, like in this doc:
