1. Great tutorial - one suggestion
Great stuff, especially the explanation of multiplexing. 
 
Suggestion: Make sure you use appropriate current limiting resistors for *each* segment. Don't just use one on the "common" line, or the segment brightness will vary by the number of segments lit (more segments lit = dimmer). So, a "1" would look OK, but an "8" would be quite dim.
