SMBJ5.0A Transient Voltage Suppressor Diode
A transient voltage suppressor or TVS is a general classification of an array of devices that are designed to react to sudden or momentary over voltage conditions. The SMBJ5.0A TVS diode operates by shunting excess current when the induced voltage exceeds the avalanche breakdown potential. It is a clamping device, suppressing all over voltages above its breakdown voltage. It automatically resets when the over voltage goes away, but absorbs much more of the transient energy internally than a similarly rated crowbar device.
